October 21, 1917: Dizzy Gillespie is Born

On this day in 1917, self-taught jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader John “Dizzy” Birks Gillespie was born in South Carolina. Regarded by many as one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz, he was a key developer of the bebop movement, the first kind of modern jazz in the 1940s.

Gillespie’s zany on-stage antics earned him the nickname “Dizzy” while playing in many bands including those lead by Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington.

Learn more about Dizzy Gillespie’s talent by reading his biography featured on Ken Burns’ ”Jazz” film site.
